Upcoming Opportunities From: City of Dublin, Ohio

Volunteer: Macroinvertebrate Survey

Get outside, give back and learn something new all in one evening!

Volunteers are invited to participate in a macroinvertebrate survey around the Dublin Community Recreation Center. The number and diversity of macroinvertebrates provides clues to the water quality in a stream. Volunteers will assist MAD Scientist Associates in finding, identifying and recording macroinvertebrates in Indian Run both upstream and downstream of the Dublin Community Recreation Center. This data will be analyzed after the project and shared with both the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District and the City of Dublin as part of the City’s commitment to Sustainability.

Volunteers will receive training on capturing, identifying and recording macroinvertebrates in the stream. Halfway through the program, volunteers will walk to the other side of the Dublin Community Recreation Center and repeat the process.

This project does require volunteers to walk off-trail on uneven ground, walk and stand in the steam itself and catch and release macroinvertebrates.

Volunteers will meet at the Coffman Park West Shelter (near tennis courts and restrooms)

Volunteer: Water Quality Monitoring Blitz

Help us monitor water quality along Indian Run Stream!

Volunteers will meet at the Coffman West Shelter (near the restrooms by the tennis courts) for an orientation and training on how to use the monitoring wands and log the data.

Then groups will be sent out by car, bike or hiking to designated sites along the stream to monitor water in specific locations.

They may also collect a sample of water to be lab tested for hardness.

By gathering this information, we have a snapshot of the stream health that can be compared to similar blitzes in the past. This information is helpful in identifying problem areas, trends and other stream health data.

Volunteers should be able to walk off-trail and provide their own transportation, if necessary.
